Deer Aging
The age of a deer can be accurately estimated from the dental characteristics of the lower jaw. The two techniques used are replacement/wear and cementum annuli.
Cementum Annuli technique is similar to aging a tree by counting growth ring and is the most reliable method for accuracy of age. This technique is expensive because it needs to be done with specialized laboratory equipment and detail analysis.
There are commercial services available for this ranging from $80-$200!

Here at Dunk Hill Skulls I have become committed to learning how to appropriately and accurately age deer by tooth replacement and wear.
This process requires practice and consistent studying of diagrams from a variety of Conservation, Biology and Natural Resource Departments.
With handling between 75-150 deer a season, over a vast range of counties throughout New York state, it is evident that I have the opportunity to constantly estimate deer age.
I am not a whitetail biologist but would love to offer up my experienced opinion to my clients when they are curious to know more about their trophy!
